THE EFFECT OF INTRAVENOUS IRON SUCROSE TREATMENT ON MATERNAL HEMOGLOBINE LEVEL AND NEONATAL BIRTH WEIGHT

ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of intravenous (iv) iron sucrose treatment in pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) on maternal hemoglobine (Hb) level and neonatal birth weight.

Material and Method: 97 pregnant women, who admitted to Usak Educational and Training Hospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2015-2018, records were evaluated. Patients with IDA were included in this study and separated three groups according to started of iv iron sucrose treatment by gestational week(w). Group 1 (n=32): 21-31 w / group 2(n= 31) 32-35 w/group 3(n= 34) 36-38 w. All groups were compared in terms of demographic features, pre-treatment Hb and ferritine level, post -treatment Hb level at 15. day and birth, neonatal birth weight, week and APGAR score at birth.

Results: In all groups, post treatment 15. day and birth, increased Hb values up to border of anemia according to trimester was observed. There were not any significant differences between the groups in terms of post-treatment Hb level at 15. day and birth (Group 1/2/3, p=0,363/0,282/0,352). Target Hb value (≥12 g/dl) at birth was observed in group 1(12,1±0.9g/dl (10.1-14.5). Low birth weight, low APGAR score and preterm delivery were not observed in any groups (Grup 1/2/3, p=0,633/0,245/0,585).

Conclusion: Intravenous iron sucrose treatment rapidly increased maternal Hb value on the border of anemia by trimester in short time and there were not any negative effect on the neonatal birth weight.
